Rafael Palomar
Group Leader · Assoc. Prof. (PhD) · The Intervention Centre, Oslo University Hospital · NTNU
Rafael Palomar leads MESH|Lab at the Intervention Centre, Oslo University Hospital. His work spans image-guided surgery, soft-tissue simulation, reproducible operating systems for medical computing, and the long-term maintenance of open-source clinical software.
He is the lead maintainer of SystoleOS, SlicerLiver, SlicerSOFA, and the Brainlab/SystoleOS navigation bridge. Externally he collaborates with Brigham and Women's Hospital, Inria, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the Paris Brain Institute, and Queen's University, and serves on European project consortia in stereotactic neurosurgery and clinical AI.
Current projects
Eléonore Germond
MSc student · IMT Atlantique
Eléonore works on SlicerSOFA and its ROS 2 bridge — bringing deformable-tissue simulation and robotic control into the planning environment surgeons already use.
Current projects

Khai Duong
MSc student · NTNU
Khai works on SystoleOS — the lab's reproducible operating system for medical applications — and on the infrastructure the lab's clinical research runs on.
Current projects
Omar El Hajj
MSc student · NTNU
Omar El Hajj works on SystoleOS, the lab's reproducible operating system for medical applications.
Current projects

Bjørn Edwin
clinical · Prof. (MD, PhD) · OUS, UiO
Bjørn von Gohren Edwin is Professor and Consultant Surgeon at Oslo University Hospital and the University of Oslo, head of the Section for Clinical Research at the Intervention Centre, and a clinical collaborator on MESH|Lab's surgical-software work — most directly on liver-resection planning (SlicerLiver).
Current projects

Davit Aghayan
clinical · Dr. (MD, PhD) · The Intervention Centre, OUS
Dr. Davit Aghayan is a clinical collaborator at the Intervention Centre, Oslo University Hospital. He contributes to MESH|Lab's liver-surgery research stream.

Gabriella d'Albenzio
technical · Dr. (PhD) · Queen's University, Canada
Dr. Gabriella d'Albenzio works on liver-resection planning — segmentation, vessel-tree analysis, and the geometry of the planned resection surface (SlicerLiver). She is now hosted at Queen's University in Canada and continues as an associated member of MESH|Lab.
Current projects

Ruoyan Meng
technical · The Intervention Centre, OUS · NTNU
Ruoyan is a PhD student jointly hosted at the Intervention Centre, Oslo University Hospital and NTNU. She contributes to SlicerLiver — patient-specific liver-resection planning, visualisation, and the geometry behind virtual resections.
Current projects
Jonas Ludwig
technical · KIT Institute of Biomedical Engineering
Jonas wrote his MSc thesis on a deep reinforcement learning approach to neurosurgical trajectory planning, framing the problem as a sequential decision task over medical imaging and vascular models. The work was done at the KIT Institute of Biomedical Engineering in cooperation with The Intervention Centre, and completed in 2026.
